Differences Between Chipboard, MDF Board & Plywood


- Chip Board:

- Combining woodchips and sawdust which is heated & pressed together.

- Medium-density fibreboard (MDF):

- engineered wood fibre pressed together to form a board.

- Plywoord:

- Sheets of wood veneers that are crossed laminated and fastened together.


Materials Advantages Disadvantages
Chip Board

- Low Price.

- Easily available.

- Very low resistance to water.

- Prone to edges splits and cracks.

MDF Board

- Better resistance to water than chip boards.

- Better strength compared to chip board.

- Medium Price compared to chip board.

- Heavy & dense load.

Plywood

- Water resistance & lasting, as mostly used on kitchen cabinets etc (Dry ~ Wet).

- High strength and lasting.

- High Price compared to MDF boards.

- Edges have to be finished with laminate.
